Ancient Rome
The Colosseum, the Forum and the Palatine are one archaeological site and take most of the day. Then the Vittoriano with its terraces and the Pantheon: from antiquity to what antiquity was reused for.

Squares and fountains
The easiest day: Navona, Trevi, the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo stand almost in a chain, five to ten minutes apart. It ends in the gardens of the Villa Borghese, with the terrace above Piazza del Popolo looking back over the centre.

The Vatican
Castel Sant'Angelo on the way, then St Peter's and the museums. Leave at least three hours for the museums: the Sistine Chapel sits at the end of their route rather than behind its own entrance.
