Day 1

Baixa and Alfama

Uphill from Praça do Comércio at the water: the Santa Justa lift, the cathedral, and the castle of São Jorge at the very top. A kilometre and a half as the crow flies, but almost all of it climbing, which is a full day.

Day 2

Belém

Belém is its own district away from the centre, reached by tram or train. The Jerónimos monastery, the tower at the water and the monument to the discoveries all stand within a kilometre of each other.

Day 3

Bairro Alto and the viewpoints

The Glória funicular lifts you into Bairro Alto and the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, which looks across the centre to the castle opposite. Then downhill to Marquês de Pombal square and into the Eduardo VII park.
