Unhurried Madrid: Malasaña, Chueca and sunset in Oeste Park
A route for those who have already done Gran Vía, the Prado and the Royal Palace and want to see Madrid through quiet streets, independent coffee shops and districts where Madrileños spend their time.
A slow morning in Malasaña
Start the day in Malasaña, one of the city's liveliest and most creative districts. There are no long queues at major sights here, but plenty of small coffee shops, bookstores, studios and quiet streets with characteristic 19th-century Madrid architecture.
Do not aim to see everything. This district is best taken without rushing: peek into inner courtyards and small shops, and rest in squares with a cup of coffee.
After lunch — Chueca
From Malasaña it is an easy walk to the neighboring Chueca district. Despite its popularity, it remains one of the most comfortable areas for a stroll. It is pleasant simply to walk without a pre-planned route, watching city life go by.
Along the way you will find design shops, art galleries, wine bars and modern restaurants. It is a good district for a long stop over a late lunch or coffee.
Evening in Oeste Park
Toward evening, head to Oeste Park. It is home to the Temple of Debod, an ancient Egyptian temple gifted to Spain by Egypt. The area around it is considered one of the best places in the city to watch the sunset.
After the sun goes down, you can unhurriedly walk back to Plaza de España or finish the day with dinner at one of the nearby restaurants.
