Rome in a weekend: antiquity, the Vatican and the center
A basic first-trip route: the Colosseum, the Vatican, fountain squares and short hops through the historic center.
Day 1: Ancient Rome
Start at the Colosseum and Roman Forum, with an early entry if possible. This block is best not split up: it takes time and energy but gives the main historical frame of the trip.
After lunch you can add a short walk to Piazza Venezia and the Altare della Patria to connect the ancient and later layers of the city.
Day 2: the Vatican
Keep the Vatican for a separate day: St. Peter's Basilica, the museums and the walk toward Castel Sant'Angelo. Here it is important not to try to see everything but to choose a priority — the basilica or the museums.
In the evening, return through the center with a short stop at the bridges over the Tiber — it helps you feel the city as living fabric, not just a list of sights.
Day 3: fountains and the center
On the third day, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps work well together. It is a lighter, more urban day after museum-heavy and ancient zones.
End the trip with a long dinner in the center — in Rome food often becomes part of the route, not just a break between locations.
